What’s Behind the Answer:

Historic Church on Wylie.

When Reynoldstown, Atlanta, was established in 1870 by formerly enslaved people, they built homes in the

community. The Reynolds family established a general store and became community leaders for whom the community was named.

It is reasonably assumed that community churches would be built along with the construction of homes and commercial buildings. Wylie Chapel or Wylie Chapel AM&E was one of the churches erected in that period. Due to a lack of historical documentation, the only known record of Wylie Chapel’s existence before 1900 is an aerial drawing of Atlanta from 1892, depicting the western portion of Reynoldstown and Sanborn Map (1911) Cabbagetown. In the drawing is a church close to where Wylie Chapel exists. In later Sanborn maps from 1911, Wylie Chapel AM&E is documented in its current location.
